Sophia’s DP Art Exhibition: Exploring Memory Through Art

Each year, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme Visual Arts students present a final exhibition showcasing the culmination of their two-year artistic journey. Through the course, students are encouraged to explore personal and cultural themes, experiment with diverse materials and techniques, and develop their own creative voice as reflective and confident artists. Among this year’s exhibitions was Sophia’s thoughtful collection of work centered around the theme of memory.

Sophia’s exhibition explored personal sensations of preserving memories, as well as symbolism that many viewers may find relatable. Using a variety of materials and artistic approaches, her body of work investigated concepts such as fragmented memory, illusion of memory, cultural memory, nostalgia, and mythological symbolism. Through these themes, Sophia examined how memories shape identity, emotions, and collective histories.

One of the featured works in the exhibition, Inherited Wisdom, represented memory through the symbolism of an elephant, inspired by the animal’s well-known association with long-lasting remembrance. The piece depicted an African elephant decorated with tribal-inspired patterns engraved into its ear, symbolizing cultural memory and ancient forms of communication used across generations.

As the artwork developed, Sophia incorporated her own visual elements and interpretations into the piece, transforming it into a reflection of her personal experiences and artistic perspective. While inspired by broader cultural symbolism, the work ultimately conveyed the importance of heritage, inherited wisdom, and the role memory plays in preserving culture and identity.

Sophia’s exhibition demonstrated how art can serve as a powerful medium for exploring abstract ideas and connecting personal experiences with universal human themes.
