Fencing
WHY FENCING?
Fencing is a combat sport that features sword fighting. It is an ancient form of combat that has evolved into a competitive sport over time. Fencing as a co-curricular activity in schools is a great way to encourage physical fitness, discipline, and strategic thinking among students.
The sport of fencing involves three different weapons: the foil, the epee, and the sabre. Each weapon has its own set of rules and techniques, and they are used in different types of competitions. The foil is a light weapon that is used for thrusting attacks, and it is the most commonly used weapon in the sport. The epee is a heavier weapon that is used for thrusting and cutting attacks, and it is the most traditional weapon used in fencing. The sabre is a curved sword that is used for cutting and thrusting attacks, and it is the most aggressive and fast-paced weapon used in fencing.
Fencing as a co-curricular activity involves learning the basics of footwork, attack, defense, and strategy. Students are taught how to move on the fencing strip, how to attack and defend themselves, and how to anticipate their opponent's movements. Fencing is a sport that requires quick reflexes, precise movements, and mental agility. As such, students who participate in fencing can improve their coordination, concentration, and decision-making skills.
In a typical fencing class or practice, students will first warm up with stretching and basic movements before moving on to drills and sparring. Fencing competitions are typically conducted in a round-robin format, where each fencer will compete against every other fencer in their pool. The top fencers in each pool will then advance to the elimination rounds, where they will compete in a single-elimination format until a winner is determined.
In conclusion, fencing as a co-curricular activity is a great way to promote physical fitness, discipline, and strategic thinking among students. WHY FITNESS?
The fitness club provides KIS students with the opportunity to engage in physical activities and exercises before the school day of lessons begins. The club aims to improve physical health, prevent obesity, enhance mental well-being, promote social interaction and develop healthy habits. The club's positive environment encourages students to lead an active lifestyle, fostering a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. Overall, the fitness club contributes to the holistic development of students by promoting both physical and mental well-being.
Football
WHY FOOTBALL?
Our football program offers a wide range of benefits in a fun and competitive format, where our football teams will have a number of opportunities to play football games with students from other international schools both within Almaty via COASH and also within the region of Central Asia through CAFA. Some of the benefits of participating in this program include:
- Physical Fitness and Health: Football is a physically demanding sport that helps students develop strength, endurance, agility, and cardiovascular fitness.
- Teamwork and Cooperation: Football is a team sport that teaches students the importance of working together towards a common goal. Players learn how to communicate effectively, collaborate, and rely on each other's strengths, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie.
- Discipline and Time Management: Football requires consistent practice, training, and dedication. Student-athletes learn valuable time management skills as they balance their academic responsibilities with their commitments to the team. They also develop discipline, setting routines and adhering to schedules.
- Leadership Skills: Football provides opportunities for students to take on leadership roles within the team, such as team captains or other leadership positions. These experiences help students develop leadership skills, decision-making abilities, and the confidence to guide their peers.
- Social Skills and Friendships: Being part of a football team exposes students to a diverse group of peers and fosters lasting friendships. They learn to interact with people from different backgrounds, develop communication skills, and build a sense of belonging within the team and school community.
- Skill Development: Football hones a variety of physical and mental skills, including coordination, balance, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and quick decision-making.
Lastly KIS will arrange football games with other schools in Almaty via the COASH organization. The games will take place over a number of weeks throughout season 1 and these will be after school. There will be a number of teams that will be dependent on the age of the students and these are as follows: U13. Junior Varsity (JV) . Varsity (V).
Junior Varsity - must be under 16 years of age on September 1st of the current school year.
Varsity - must be under 20 years of age on September 1st of the current school year.
